Mid-Winter Celebrations

What better way to while away a winter weekend than with great food, wine and a few good friends? Celebrate the season with a mid-winter Christmas in Wairarapa.

The Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park, Wairarapa has celebrated mid-winter with a Christmas themed dinner and dance for many years.“Our annual mid-winter Christmas Celebration, held on Saturday the 25th of July is a popular fixture for dinner guests and staff at Copthorne Solway Park. We all look forward to the festivities, the decorations and the traditional food - turkey with all the trimmings. It’s always a great night with guests usually dancing until midnight,” says Copthorne General Manager Jerry Crump.

Dinner guests will be met at the door with a glass of bubbly and enjoy a five-course buffet from 6.30pm onwards. Popular singer, songwriter and all-round entertainer Shaun Preston will perform from around 8pm until midnight.

Tickets for the mid- winter Christmas celebration are available from the Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park Wairarapa on 06 370 0504, or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Mid-winter Christmas dinner guests can also receive a 20% discount on the price of a Tranzit Gourmet or Garden Escape day tour on Saturday 25th or Sunday 26th July, combine the two for a fabulous winter weekend in Wairarapa.

At Gladstone Vineyards the ‘Long Lazy Lunches’ are continuing over the winter months with awesome local bands playing live music the third Sunday of every month. Tess O’Hara will be there for their June slot on 21st June and hopefully Pat McKenna and Stefan Brown for a jam on 19th July.

Also through the Winter months Gladstone will have a special release dinner for their Gladstone Fume Blanc 2008 on June 7th, and on July 12th they will have the Auld Alliance celebrations for Bastille day. July/August will see the re launch of the Indoor eating area for the Café, when they hope to have a ‘Month of Music’ every Sunday throughout August to celebrate the new Indoor eating space which will allow for a more comfortable eating area through the colder months.

English owners of Brookfields in Eketahuna, Terry and Corinna Carew have yet to come to terms with a sunny Christmas and as such enjoy their mid winter Christmas carveries as much as their customers. “It’s all about dark winter nights, roaring fires and closed curtains, I’m not sure I’m ever going to feel comfortable about barbies on Christmas Day” says Maitre d' Corinna.

Their enthusiasm for getting it right pays off though, with many guests booking from last year. “We go all out. Table decorations, crackers, kids bubbles and definitely cheesy Christmas music. I love decorating the room with tinsel and Christmas lights, and I have to put up a tree. The kids think its fab, we started last year putting disposable cameras on the tables too as a few guests forgot to bring theirs. Its always fun to see people posing with their Christmas hats on” says Corinna

The guests get into the theme too with many dressing up in Christmas costumes, although Terry draws the line when Corinna asks him to dress up as Santa!!.”

The food is certainly tempting too. Roast stuffed Turkey, Beef and Pork as well as vegetarian options, and all the English trimmings like stuffing balls, sausages wrapped in bacon and Yorkshire puddings you would expect. There’s even Christmas pudding with brandy sauce.

It’s all about getting friends and family together in what can be a miserable time of year and what better way to beat the winter blues than a get together at Brookfields.

“As your table is booked for the entire night, you can sit back and relax or as long as you like. Groups over 20 get the restaurant to themselves and that’s when people really enjoy themselves without  worrying about disturbing other guests,”  says Chef Terry who has as much fun as Corinna at this time of year.

“Its great to see people happy and getting together with friends and family at this time. We really do think of it as our Christmas.”

Also new on the menu at Brookfields are their $20 winter warmers. An exciting 2 course menu that won’t break the bank. With different winter dishes each week this could be just the excuse you need for a great night out.

So if the winter nights are looking a bit long give Brookfields a call and get the party started.
