Whether you are a contemporary classicist or a funky individualist, it’s all about you, say Wendy Turton and Rebecca Meads of Greytown’s Affinity. Affinity now has a light, bright Mainstreet space devoted to interior design, with ample room to view the wide range of samples, and designer pieces. And most importantly, get excited about your project!
“The look that we help you to create must resonate with you,” says Rebecca. “We suggest people keep the current trends in mind but really follow their own hearts.”
There is no danger of being pressured into expensive or hyper-trendy styles. “A scheme must tie into your lifestyle and budget,” says Rebecca. “Here in Wairarapa, we know that people have issues of mud, dust, dogs, children and intense sunshine to contend with.”
Two of Affinity’s most popular brands – Hemptech and Vortex Pacific Textiles - have been designed in New Zealand with just these aspects in mind. Both use natural fabrics that are extremely durable, thermal and UV resistant. Hemptech’s hemp and hemp blend fabrics are grown without the use of herbicides or sprays.
A 1960s suite, re-upholstered in black Hemptech fabric, is a chic example of Affinity’s ethos of giving older pieces a new look, rather than ditching what you have to buy an ultra modern (and likely ultra expensive) new item. “We’re into reviving old things and keeping those ‘stories’ alive,” says Wendy.
Wendy and Rebecca can discuss designs at the shop, or meet people at home for a formal consultation. Recently Wendy has been consulting at a former dairy factory that is being renovated as a private home. One of the rewards of the business is seeing people’s excitement when they find an option they love, she says. “And there are always so many options that can work.”
